The Rising Sign

Your Ascendant Sign, also known as the Rising Sign, is the starting point that sets the stage for your entire life's story, determining your physical presentation, identity, motivations, and how the world perceives you.
In this article, I will provide a foundational overview on the Rising Sign, with examples of how each planet manifests in the first house.
First, What is a Natal Chart?
Your natal chart, or birth chart, is a map that marks the moment that you emerged from the waters of the womb to sip your first, independent breath. It serves as a companion to the story of your life as it unfolds, as well as a testimony to your lived experience. Within it are two reference points: the horizon and the meridian. The horizon, or horizontal orientation, separates the stars that are above from those that are below, as well as the rising and falling of the stars, from east to west. On this trajectory, we encounter the Ascendant (AC) and the Descendant (DC) points, which I describe in more detail later in this article.
The Role of the Ascendant
At the moment of birth, the first breath coincides with the zodiac sign that is rising on the eastern horizon, proclaiming the beginning of the life cycle. On the significations of the first house, Howard Sasportas writes, “The sign of the Ascendant symbolizes a particular facet of the totality of life which literally seeks embodiment through what is being born at the moment.” Thus the Ascendant is the first zodiac sign or zodiacal principle that we embody in early life.
The part of a natal chart called the Ascendant (AC), also referred to as the Rising sign, begins in the Eastern horizon and marks the cusp of the First House. In this realm, we begin the journey to understand ourselves. In this early stage, our innate sensibilities are engaged as we develop greater autonomy and self-awareness. As our consciousness deepens and matures, our ability to perceive the environment, as well as those who dwell alongside us within that environment, also ripens and expands.
Your Rising Sign is Your Life’s Horizon
The foundation of your natal chart is unique to you. As a symbolic map of your life, it includes the four cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. Beginning in the East, the zodiac sign that was ascending on the Eastern horizon at the time of your birth is called your Ascendant (AC), or Rising sign, and it determines the order of the remaining zodiac signs and the houses that they fall within. There are three additional angles essential to the natal chart: The Descendant, the Medium Coeli, and the Imum Coeli.
The sign opposite your Ascendent is known as the Descendant (DC), as referenced above. The Descendant is always on axis to the Ascendant at the same degree and is located in the opposing sign. It represents other people, marriage, and partnerships in the natal chart. Ancient astrologers also referred to this as the “helm” of the chart.
The point directly overhead is called the Medium Coeli (MC), or the Midheaven. Translated from Latin it means, “the top of the heavens,” and marks the zenith and most visible part of the natal chart. This point represents public image, vocation, and career.
The sign directly opposite the Medium Coeli is the Imum Coeli (IC) marking the nadir, or the root of the natal chart. In Latin, it means “the bottom of the heavens,” and refers to the subterranean realm, or the deepest parts of ourselves that are not visible because they are below the horizon.
Similar to the Ascending and Descending axis, the Medium Coeli and the Imum Coeli always oppose each other to the same degree.
Understanding the First House
Your Ascendant Sign, or Rising Sign, is the starting point that sets the stage for your entire life's story, determining your physical presentation, identity, motivations, and how the world perceives you. To determine what astrological sign your first house is in, you will need the exact day, location, and time of your birth. Together, this essential data can be input into an astrology software to calculate the degree of your Ascendant and which sign it is located in.
Subsequently, this data also allows you to calculate other important points in your chart, including the Midheaven, Imum Coeli, the North and South Nodes, and the Arabic Parts (commonly known as the Lots). Other advanced timing techniques, such as Annual Profections and Zodiacal Releasing, also rely on the correct degree and position of the Ascendant.
Key Areas Influenced
Physical Presence: Appearance and the Body
How is it that the Ascendant and first house determines our physical presence and the appearance of our bodies? Similar to other cosmologies across the world, astrology is rooted in the premise of “as above, so below,” a concept which comes from The Emerald Tablet, one of three essential texts in The Book of Hermetica. Essentially, this means that what happens above in the celestial sphere or heavens also happens below in the terrestrial world, here on Earth. Researchers of astronomy and planetary science have written extensively on the subject, proving that the fundamental elements that exist in space, including the components in stars, also exist on Earth and within us.
Sense of Identity and Vitality: Life Motivation and Direction
In ancient astrology, the Ascendant and the first house was also referred to as the “helm,” referring to the steering mechanism of a ship, which also denotes a position of authority, control, and leadership. The direction of our lives is essentially steered by the position of the Ascendant and first house. It is how we show up to life, the way in which we navigate it, and generally governs our vitality. Additionally, there are several other factors that influence our identity, as well as motivation, including the planet that rules our Ascendant sign, its location and condition, and how it relates to other planets and points in our chart.
On this topic, humanistic astrologer, musician, and painter Dan Rudhyar writes, “It means that out of the inconceivably vast storehouse of evolutionary materials belonging to humanity as a whole, a certain number of elements have been “selected” to form a (relatively) new and original combination: an individual person.” What Rudhyar is pointing out is how interconnected our solar system is, how that interconnection is mirrored in us, and how astrology can help us understand our unique elemental combination—in other words, how fire, air, earth, and water shape us and our lived experiences.
First Impressions: How the World Perceives You
The ascendant and first house also represents how we come across to others, and the first impression that people have about us. This is, in part, due to the astronomical foundations upon which the astrological houses are derived (i.e. the ascendant and first house literally begins, initiates, or ascends to proclaim a new life cycle). The conception of first impressions, and its connection to the first house, can also show us the extent to which other people project their impressions on us. Thus, it reveals how unchecked biases and assumptions can influence how we perceive and understand ourselves.
Relationship to the The Descendant (DC)
It is important to remember that the Ascendant is always opposing the Descendant. The house of the Descendant is the seventh house, and represents other people, marriage, and partnerships. Other than planets that are conjunct the Ascendant, the oppositional axis between the Ascendant and Descendant is one of the first aspects we encounter in the birth chart. Another way to conceptualize this relationship is to recall the image of the horizon and meridian, which are a naturally occurring polarity; they complement each other and one point does not exist without the other.
Significations of the First House by Planet
Sun in the First House
When the source of light and life is located in the first house, it signifies a person whose vitality and sense of individuality is strong. On a high polarity, this person may have a strong sense of self awareness and be driven toward roles and relationships where they take the lead and can act with purpose for the benefit of all. On a low polarity, a person with the Sun in the first house may be overly fixated on themselves, concerned only with their inner life, and unaware of the needs of others.
Born in Essex, England, Alfred Hitchcock is said to have the Sun in the first house, though there is conflicting birth data. He was one of the most influential figures in cinema with a career that spanned nearly 60 years. Known as the “Master of Suspense” Hitchcock made appearances in most of his films, and received numerous award nominations.
Moon in the First House
The Moon is a satellite of the planet Earth, and is also considered a luminary. Although the Moon does not produce its own light, we depend on the light that it reflects from the Sun. The Moon represents the body and the body's cycles and is the guide for nocturnal activity. It is as essential to the sustaining of life on Earth as is the Sun. A person born with the Moon in the first house may approach life in an imaginative and sensitive way. On a high polarity this person is intuitive and can see or feel what others might not. On a low polarity a person with the Moon in the first might be overwhelmed by their own emotional landscape, or experience fluctuations in their mood that may feel disconcerting.
Legendary musician, actress, and philanthropist Dolly Parton has her Moon conjunct the cusp of the first house. Parton has been infamously scrutinized throughout her long career, constantly objectified due to her physical appearance.
Mercury in the First House
When the planet of communication and thinking is located in the first house, a person might be adept intellectually, with an inquisitive nature. Their inner life might be driven by a need to understand the reason why things happen in certain ways. On a high polarity someone with Mercury in the first house will approach life with curiosity and a willingness to ask questions. On a low polarity, this person may be prone to overthinking and overanalyzing. Their quest to understand might come across as a need to control by attempting to improve or fix everything.
Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter whose work explores themes of identity, the body and emotions, chronic pain, culture, and nature, was born with Mercury in the first house. After surviving a devastating accident, Kahlo would be bed-ridden for years, forced to stay in a recumbent position for much of her life. She would come to rely on her hands and imagination as a primary means of channeling her pain, and to express the workings of her brilliantly creative mind.
Venus in the First House
Venus is the planetary principle of love and attraction. When Venus is in the first house a person is concerned with finding meaning and value in life. With Venus on the Ascendant, we often find people who are charming and a magnet to others. On a high polarity, this placement can harness their ability to create beauty and utility in the world for the benefit of others. On a low polarity, a person with Venus in the first house can become overly focused on their own aesthetic or material value, seeking only that which pleases them, perhaps, to their detriment.
Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni, Jr., born in Knoxville, TN, had Venus in the first house. Giovanni was a beloved poet, activist, and educator well known for addressing race, class, and gender issues, and was instrumental to the Black Arts Movement. She wrote about the spectrum of our experiences as human beings, and was a pioneer in addressing social issues in children’s literature. She not only wrote beautifully, but her speaking voice was unique, confident, and lyrical.
Mars in the First House
Mars in the first house of self, identity, and vitality gives a person the courage to see things through, and the fortitude to pierce beyond the surface to gain a deeper understanding than mere appearance provides. On a high polarity a person with Mars in the first house can wield their natural ability to act on instinct to protect and defend the most vulnerable. On a low polarity, people with this placement can be overly aggressive toward others, seeking combat or conflict as a means to assert themselves in the world.
French-born diarist, novelist, essayist, and writer of erotic short stories, Anaïs Nin was born with Mars in the first house conjunct the North Node. Born to Cuban parents, Nin was a prolific writer, and journaled extensively about her inner life, private thoughts, and numerous intimate partnerships with women and men. Nin did not shy away from telling the piercing truth of her life with clarity and insight, and was one of the foremost prominent female writers to explore erotic pleasure.
Jupiter in the First House
Jupiter in the first house provides a person with the ability to be expansive in how they seek self wisdom. With Jupiter on the Ascendant, a person with this placement is naturally driven toward traditional knowledge systems, involving meaningful social engagement. On a high polarity, Jupiter in the first house will engage rituals and ceremonies as sacred practices to fortify their inner life in communion with others. On a low polarity, Jupiter in the first can become too righteous in their quest for wisdom, negating other people’s perspectives and beliefs.
Audre Lorde, the beloved black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet, had Jupiter in the first house. She dedicated her life to addressing racism, sexism, and homophobia through her creative talent as an orator and cultural worker. Jupiter in the first is often seen in the charts of those who are known for speaking, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Rev. Al Sharpton.
Saturn in the First House
Saturn provides structure and an awareness of limitations, and in the first house, a person with this placement might have been pushed into the responsibilities of adulthood at an early age. This person may also have an innate wisdom beyond their years. On a high polarity, a person with Saturn in the first has the ability to generate a sense of safety and security for themselves and others. On a low polarity, this placement might make a person hardened and stubborn, unwilling to be soft or show vulnerability.
Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in North Carolina, Nina Simone, who earned the moniker of “High Priestess of Soul," was a pianist, singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist. She began her music career early in life, learning to play the piano at age three or four. Despite her natural talent, Simone was denied entrance into a well-known institution of music education. Similar setbacks and imposed limitations like this would become thematic throughout her career.
Uranus in the First House
Uranus was the first planet, beyond what was perceived to be the limits of space, to be discovered with the use of a telescope on March 13, 1781. Where Saturn maintains boundaries, Uranus symbolically defies them. A person with Uranus in the first house seeks to understand the complexity of inner life by reforming what is no longer working. As children they may have experienced great upheaval that led to sudden or abrupt change. On a high polarity, Uranus allows us to see where systems require an update in order to better function. On a low polarity, the restlessness that can be inherent in this placement might lead to dissatisfaction and a constant need to dismantle.
The Argentine-born revolutionary, guerilla leader, and author Ernesto “Che” Guevara, well-known for his foundational role in the Cuban Revolution, had Uranus conjunct the Ascendant, as well as Jupiter, in the first house. Che has become a symbol for anti-imperialism and radical youth-led rebellion across the world.
Neptune in the First House
Neptune was discovered through a telescopic lens deep into the night on September 23-24, 1846. Neptune is symbolic of depth, as it is tied to the mythology of the sea. Like the ocean, Neptune represents an all encompassing energy. People with Neptune in the firs house may seek transcendental experiences to know themselves more deeply. There is a natural understanding of the ebb and flow of life, a keen sensitivity to liminal experiences, and a concern for humanity. On a high polarity, Neptune in the first house can show up in a person as robust intuitive and psychic skills. On a low polarity a person with Neptune in the first house may get swept away in the undertow of illusion, and struggle to cohere. The person with Neptune in the first house can benefit from anchoring themselves in the present moment while they develop their intuition.
The exquisite poet, memorist, and civil rights activist Maya Angelo was born in St. Louis, MO with Neptune in the first house, closely conjunct the Ascendant. Dr. Angelou is well known for her deep, commanding voice and outstanding oratory skills. The power of her words and voice are at once profound, and also deeply embracing, dissolving the boundaries of time and space with an echoing and enduring presence.
Pluto in the First House
On February 18, 1930, the complex world of Pluto came into view when it was discovered by telescope in the distant Kuiper Belt. In 2006, it was reclassified as a dwarf planet, further adding to its mystery. Pluto is large enough to have a rounded shape, but distant enough where debris and other objects might cross its orbit. Due to its astronomical characteristics, Pluto symbolizes that which is subterranean, below and beyond what we can see. On a high polarity, those who are born with Pluto in the first house seek for deeper meaning and truth in life and will share that power with others. On a low polarity, this placement can be power-hungry, uncompromising and ruthless in their pursuits.
Kurt Cobain was born with Pluto in the first house sitting close to his Ascendant. He has become an icon of the grunge era as the lead musician and primary songwriter for the band he co-founded, Nirvana. Cobain’s musicianship would change the trajectory of rock music by introducing underground grunge with his raw, deeply emotional lyrics. As he and his band became more popular, Cobain challenged the music industry from the inside by questioning the conventions of the mainstream, addressing corruption and harmful behavior, and pushing back on established norms. Cobain also had the planet Uranus conjunct the Ascendant.
